TRAILBLAZER. PIONEER. GIANT.

Being the first is not an easy feat. You've learned that it takes guts, will power, reflection, failures, family and so much more. The first-generation identity is woven throughout UMD, from students all the way to first-gen college graduates like President Pines and Vice President for Student Affairs Perillo. Every First-Gen Terp has a powerful story. Here are some of ours.

Joy Sharp '27

Joy, public health practice major, shares what being a first-generation college student means to her.

"If you want to try something new, don't be afraid to do so. No matter your background or where you come from, just know that you belong here."

Melissa Del Rios

Melissa Del Rios is assistant director for the C.D. Mote, Jr. Incentive Awards Program.

"Trust in yourself and rely on others. Take those risks; don't be afraid to say yes even when you're not sure where it's going to lead."

Jerry Zremski

Jerry Zremski is Klingenstein Family Endowed Chair in Journalism and director of the Local News Network.

"Your first-gen status is a strength. You know a culture and a community that a lot of people would not know."
